If you're on reality TV you're going to have to figure out how to insult people but in a really nice way. It's just a prerequisite for the job. You don't want to be the villain of the season. You also don't want any of your competition’s mistakes to go unnoticed. Christopher is probably the master of this on Project Runway. He always says "I'm really scared for her". Other designers have said this on past seasons. Really, they aren't that scared. They are glad that this isn't the worst design in the room. It’s so much nicer than just saying "This is really ugly".
