Silent Night Random Facts

It seems that I always hear the song Silent Night when they are singing carols on TV. I wanted to know more about this Christmast carol so I went over to wikipedia & found this information which I then summarized in very own special, sarcastic way. Ok, so I wasn't that sarcastic, but it's Silent Night, how sarcastic could I be?

  • The lyrics were written by a German priest named Josef Mohr.
  • Both the lyrics & melody are in the public domain which might be why this is heard on TV so much.
  • Some historians think that the song was written because Mohr wanted a new carol to play on his guitar. It can also be sang without accompaniment or with pretty much any instrument. It's one of those songs that always sounds good, it would probably even work being accompanied by Ingersoll Rand air tools. I had to work the sarcasm in somehow.
  • Silent Night is one of the most popular carols & has been translated into 300 languages.
  • During the Christmas truce of 1914, both the English & German troops sang the song because it was one of the few carols that soldiers on both sides knew.
  • There is a myth, well maybe it's a myth about Silent Night. It goes that the song was forgotten until 1825 when an organ repairmen found & revived the carol.
