Really the only reason that I don't have tons of old records or even phonographs is because it was before my time. For years I have resisted the switch to buying mp3's from CDs. Sure getting a blu-ray would still closely resemble a DVD. However, I love to swap and trade my CDs and DVDs online and will continue to do so just because it's so economical/fun/and just a wicked awesome idea. Don't even get me started on digital books. Sure, I read and do tons of research online like looking up the latest shoes, a life insurance quote or random facts. However, a digital reader just could never take the place of a book for me.
However, there have been two things that have really changed that for me. The first is the Zune monthly pass subscription where I can "rent" all of the music to my hearts content legally. The second is the Roku box which has me streaming videos from Netflix, also totally legally. The only disadvantage is that compared to a DVD I don't get to keep the items forever. I only have them as long as I subscribe to the service and as long as the particular movie is made available. I think I'll just swap for the items that I have to have forever. However, in the long process of figuring out what all of the CDs and DVDs that need to be mainstays on my bookshelf are, this is really helpful.
